Small Universal Spiking Neural P Systems with Astrocytes
نویسندگان
چکیده
Spiking neural P systems with astrocytes (SNPA systems, for short) are a class of distributed parallel computing devices inspired from the way neurons communicate by means of spikes, where also astrocytes are considered, having an excitatory or an inhibitory influence on synapses. Looking for small universal computing devices is a classical research topic in computer science. In this work, we investigate small universal SNPA systems as both devices computing functions and devices generating sets of numbers. Specifically, as devices of computing functions, a universal SNPA system (without delay and forgetting rules) using 57 neurons and 19 astrocytes is obtained; as generators of sets of numbers, a universal SNPA system (without delay and forgetting rules) using 54 neurons and 17 astrocytes is found. These improve previous results on SN P systems without astrocytes and show the role of these features. Key-words: Membrane computing; Spiking neural P system; Astrocyte; Universality; Register machine.

Three small universal spiking neural P systems
In this work we give three small spiking neural P systems. We begin by constructing a universal spiking neural P system with extended rules and only 4 neurons. This is the smallest possible number of neurons for a universal system of its kind. We prove this by showing that the set of problems solved by spiking neural P systems with 3 neurons is bounded above by NL, and so there exists no such u...
متن کاملExtended Spiking Neural P systems with Excitatory and Inhibitory Astrocytes
We investigate an extended model of spiking neural P systems incorporating astrocytes and their excitatory or inhibitory influence on axons between neurons. Using very restricted variants of extended spiking neural P systems with excitatory and inhibitory astrocytes we can easily model Boolean gates like NAND-gates as well as discrete amplifiers. Key–Words: Astrocytes, Boolean functions, spikin...
متن کاملA boundary between universality and non-universality in spiking neural P systems
In this work we offer a significant improvement on the previous smallest spiking neural P systems and solve the problem of finding the smallest possible extended spiking neural P system. P˘ aun and P˘ aun [15] gave a universal spiking neural P system with 84 neurons and another that has extended rules with 49 neurons. Subsequently, Zhang et al. [18] reduced the number of neurons used to give un...
متن کاملA Small Universal Spiking Neural P System
In this work we give a small extended spiking neural P system that is weakly universal. This system is significantly smaller than the smallest strongly universal spiking neural P systems. Strong universality has strict conditions regarding the encoding of input and decoding of output. Weak universality has more relaxed conditions regarding the encoding of input and decoding of output. Păun and ...
متن کاملSmaller Universal Spiking Neural P Systems
In search for small universal computing devices of various types, we consider here the case of spiking neural P systems (SN P systems), in two variants: as devices that compute functions and as devices that generate sets of numbers. We start with the first case and we produce a universal spiking neural P system with 84 neurons. If a slight generalization of the used rules is adopted, namely, we...
